Bali is evolving. New villas, new concepts, new developments arriving faster than the roads that lead to them. Much of it is well-intentioned, some of it is good, but very little of it will still feel meaningful decades from now. The communities that were there before the cranes arrived often find themselves watching from the edges of something built in their name, but not quite for them. Cultural identity, in this context, is not easy to preserve. It requires more than intention; it requires decisions made early, consistently, and with people, not around them.
In Nyanyi, Tabanan, an emerging destination near Canggu, just west of where most activity unfolds, those decisions were made decades ago.
The Nyanyi Bali ecosystem was never approached as an asset to be maximised, but as a responsibility to the community already living around it, and to the generations who will continue to experience what is built here.
What has grown from that is a community in the truest sense. A culinary education programme that began with six students and has since produced over a thousand graduates. A polytechnic that offers a genuine pathway, not just a qualification. A restaurant where students practice for real guests and discover what they are capable of. A cacao forest that connects land, people, and learning in one place. Through care and time, the land is gradually restored, allowing it to support life once again.
Today, more than 700 people are part of Nyanyi Bali’s ecosystem. A simple but meaningful reflection of what intentional development can support. Livelihoods. Continuity. A sustainable community that has grown alongside the development rather than being displaced by it.
A legacy inherited is passive; something handed down, received, owned. A legacy lived is active; something practised daily, in how a system is run, the way land is treated, and the people are valued.
Bali will continue to evolve. The question is what kind of growth takes shape, and for whom. In Nyanyi, that question was asked early, and the answer continues to unfold.
